Why September is the best time to kick-start your fitness

After months in lockdown the children are finally back to school. This start of a new term is also a great opportunity for us to start afresh. And who doesn’t need a fresh start right now?!

It’s an opportunity for us to take back control after months of feeling a little helpless, to create new healthy habits and ensure our immune system is in top condition for the winter months ahead.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Set goals

Setting goals is vital for your success. Last week inside the BBackstage membership, we talked about goal setting and how it’s important for your goals to change over time.

In the run-up to the summer, your goal may have been to drop some pounds to feel confident in your swimsuit. Now, your goal may relate more to improving your mental health/mood through exercise. These goals are very different, but they require the same thing – regular workouts throughout the week. The reason you need to set the goal is to focus on your “why” – the real reason you are exercising. This is what will get you out of bed in the morning to workout. Choose exercise you enjoy

I’m not going to lie to you. Exercise isn’t always enjoyable. It just isn’t. But you put yourself in a much better position to succeed if you start with something you do enjoy. Then on the days when you don’t feel like it, you need to tap into your “why” and do it anyway. Schedule your exercise

This may sound a little prescriptive but scheduling exercise into your diary for the week really helps to keep things on track. Treat it as you would any other appointment, regardless of what else is going on. Taking a look at your schedule now and planning ahead is what will lead to your success. I know how busy you are, but if you can review your schedule it will help you to be realistic about what you can achieve. If you needed an excuse to get a shiny new schedule, this is it!

Be accountable

If you need accountability, find someone who can hold you to your goals/schedule. This might be a friend who you exercise with, or a partner who helps you carve out time for yourself, your kids who can time your workout and cheer you along, or the BBackstage membership. Whatever it is you need to do, put it in place now.

You don’t have to wait to the New Year to kick-start your fitness regime. Rather than waiting to January and slogging at the gym for a few weeks, only to give up having placed unrealistic pressure on yourself, get organized now like you used to do at the start of the school term and ease into your exercise with some realistic and achievable goals.
