5 Life Lessons Ballet Taught Me

Growing up I was a painfully shy child. I would hide under my mum’s skirt if anyone dared to look at me let alone talk to me. My mum tried taking me to different classes to help socialise me but nothing really worked (in fact some of the classes I attended made things worse) until I found myself in my first ballet class aged two and a half.

Despite making my mum dance at the back with me for the first six weeks, I soon fell in love. With my wonderfully patient teacher, with the graceful movement, the classical music and the beginnings of new friendships. For me ballet has always been so much more that a dance style characterised by it’s elegance and precision. It set me on a path of personal growth. Over the years, ballet taught me numerous life lessons that extend far beyond the dance studio.

1. Building Confidence

Despite starting ballet feeling incredibly shy, over time, with the patience and understanding of my teacher, I began to feel more confident. Expressing myself through movement, mastering a tricky step, performing in front of an audience (mostly parents at that age), and receiving positive feedback were monumental in building my confidence. Ballet taught me to trust in my abilities and in other people. I never felt judged. I felt like I belonged. This newfound confidence translated into other areas of my life, allowing me to make new friends and speak up in class when I started school. Ballet to this day provides me with the confidence I need to hold my head high and rise to life’s challenges.

2. Discipline

Ballet requires an unwavering commitment to practice. In preparation for exams I attended multiple classes a week and my Dad even installed a small barre in my bedroom (made from a shower rail!). This routine and schedule and repetitive exercises helped to instill a deep sense of discipline. The structured environment of ballet demands dedication and hard work, which has taught me the importance of consistency and perseverance. Whether it’s sticking to a workout regimen, meeting deadlines at work, or pursuing personal goals, the discipline cultivated through ballet ensures that I stay focused and motivated.

3. Body Awareness

Ballet dancers must be acutely aware of their bodies. Every movement, from the arch of a foot to the tilt of a head, must be controlled and purposeful. This heightened body awareness has not only improved my physical coordination and balance but also my overall health. I’ve become more attuned to my body’s needs, understanding when to push harder and when to rest. This awareness extends to maintaining good posture, practicing mindfulness, and making healthier lifestyle choices.

4. Mental Fortitude

Ballet is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. Learning complex choreography, pushing through physical pain, and performing under pressure require immense mental strength. Ballet has taught me resilience and the ability to stay calm and focused in stressful situations. This mental fortitude is invaluable in everyday life, helping me tackle obstacles, remain composed during difficult times, and maintain a positive outlook despite setbacks.

5. Grace

Grace in ballet goes beyond fluid movements and elegant lines. It encompasses the way you carry yourself, the respect you show to your instructors and peers, and the humility with which you accept critiques and praise in class. Ballet has taught me the importance of grace in my interactions with others. It has encouraged me to approach life with kindness, patience, and poise. This lesson in grace has helped me build stronger relationships and navigate social situations with ease and empathy.

Whether or not you ever step into a ballet studio, the principles learned from this beautiful art form can inspire and enhance various aspects of your life. Embrace these lessons, and you might find yourself dancing through life with a newfound elegance and strength.
